Fun, Friends, Family, Future

Kia ora, Talofu lava, Kia orana, Kam na mauri, Bula, Fakalofu lahi atu, Malolele e, Namaste, welcome.

Our school has a strong, inclusive culture, which is proud to be regarded as a caring and safe place for children and teachers to learn alongside each other.

At the beginning of this year our roll was approximately 340 students and will increase to 480 or more by the end of the year. About 60% of our students are Mäori with 30% Pacifica.

A Brief History

Our school was built in 1962 and I am the seventh principal since its inception. During the eleven (11) years I have been here, there have been many changes to this school but this year major changes to the site will occur.  In June, 13 new classrooms and a new library / ICT area will be built. It is anticipated that all this work will be completed by the end of 2010.

50 Year Celebrations

In 2012 we will hopefully celebrate 50 years as a school. Expressions of interest can be sent to the principal’s PA at: c.eagle@manurewaeast.school.nz we welcome anyone willing to help organise this event.

Education Review Office (ERO)

This year we look forward to the Education Review Office (ERO) coming to see how well we are doing things and, as usual, we look forward to them supporting our learning and providing feedback as to where we might improve.

We have the following facilities/resources on site:

¬Resource Teachers of Learning and Behaviour (RTLB) – 6 teachers are based here, working for 9 other schools including ours.

¬Special Needs Satellite Classes – There are 2 classrooms of special needs students who are managed by the Rosehill Special School Principal Glenn Nicholson.

¬ Barnardos Pre-school

¬Community Hall

¬Swimming Pool

¬2 Large Playgrounds (Junior & Senior)

¬Huge Sandpit

¬1 Softball Cage

¬ICT Suite – (apple school) up to date computer technology

¬Mobile Dental Clinic – (rotation)

¬Environmental area

¬The New Zealand Curriculum (NZC)

This year our focus is on implementing the new NZC. Our new vision is encapsulated in these four words, Fun (Parekareka), Friends (Hoahoa), Family (Whanaungatanga) and Future (Te Amua). Not only have we begun extensive professional development in raising achievement in literacy, we believe it is vital that we continue to develop a holistic approach to children learning.

Our teachers have already been doing extensive development in art and have produced their own art portfolio work so that they know exactly what to teach the students in their visual arts programmes.

Our culture groups consist of Kapahaka, Taiaha, Pacifica and Bollywood. They have been invited to perform at the five-year celebrations of the opening of the Telstra Pacific Events Centre In August 2010.

We continue to have all students learning the recorder from year 3 onwards. While some people might not like the sound of the recorder we do so because it is the easiest instrument to play and the easiest to learn to read music with. It is also an affordable instrument to purchase.

We continue with things such as lunchtime sports, which keeps our students out of mischief and safe at lunch times because they are so busy keeping fit and becoming skilled in whatever sport they choose to play. Click on this link to see a snippet of our philosophy on Lunchtime Sports.

For those of you who wish to visit our school, please always feel welcome to come in and have a look around. Our school has passionate staff who care very deeply about how children are taught and cared for and we hope you find the same.

Kind Regards
